E-Learning Instructor Guide

2.       MECHANICS

2.2   Class Correspondence

All class correspondence should be saved during the semester. Instructors have a choice between external (Send Email) or internal (Messages) e-mail.

2.2.1          Option 1 – SCC Novell Account/SCC Gmail Account

The Send Email tool within Blackboard utilizes SCC Novell (instructors) and SCC Gmail (students). E-mails are sent from Blackboard to SCC Novell and/or SCC Gmail.  If you decide to use Send E-mail, you will need to save all correspondence. Create a folder in Groupwise for each course. Save all email correspondence to this folder for a period of 18 months.

2.2.2          Option 2 – Messages

It is much easier to use Blackboard’s Messages tool. This tool is an internal correspondence system within Blackboard. You can create folders, move messages and more. All messages are saved within Blackboard, including Sent messages. Messages are automatically archived within the Blackboard course, which means that no other saving and archiving process is required. If you decide to use this tool, it is highly recommended that you ask students to correspond with you through this tool exclusively. If both Send Email and Messages are used, you will be checking two e-mail systems. To reduce your workload, and to better manage correspondence, choose one method of correspondence (i.e., Messages or Send Email). If you decide to use Messages, however, you are still required to check your Novell account on a regular basis to read Southwestern Community College administrative announcements.
